Charlie Chaplin’s first true talking picture concludes with one of cinema’s most enduring appeals to our common humanity. In it, a Jewish barber secretly replaces a Hitler caricature and issues an incredibly powerful speech to the world. 86 years later, that message is just as relevant (perhaps even more so) and I hope you find it as inspiring as I do.
The dinner table remains one of the very few places left to us where strangers may become neighbors.
In this day of remembering what our country is supposed to stand for, I hope to bring about understanding between peoples by sharing their food and recipes in Mine own inimitable style. Perhaps you can find your own way to achieve the same goal — and, in doing so, help us remember who we are meant to be as Americans and as human beings.
The ideals that built America are not self-executing. Every generation inherits them, but every generation must also earn them.
